HEIC
HEIC, or High Efficiency Image Format, is a modern image format developed by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) as a part of the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard. It is also known as HEIF, which stands for High Efficiency Image File Format. HEIC was introduced in 2015 and gained significant attention when Apple adopted it as the default image format for photos on iOS 11 and macOS High Sierra in 2017.
HEIC was designed to provide better compression and image quality than traditional formats like JPEG, with several notable features:
-
Improved Compression: HEIC offers more efficient compression than JPEG, resulting in smaller file sizes with similar or better image quality. This allows users to store more photos on their devices or reduce the bandwidth required to transmit images over the internet.
-
Lossy and Lossless Compression: HEIC supports both lossy and lossless compression, which means it can be used for a wide range of applications, from high-quality photographs to graphics with sharp edges and solid colors.
-
16-bit Color Depth: Unlike JPEG, which is limited to 8-bit color depth, HEIC supports 16-bit color depth, allowing for richer colors and smoother gradients in images.
-
Transparency and Alpha Channels: HEIC supports transparency and alpha channels, making it suitable for images that require transparent backgrounds or variable transparency, such as logos or overlays.
-
Multiple Images in One File: HEIC can store multiple images within a single file, enabling features like burst photos, image sequences, or thumbnail previews. This can also be used for storing multiple versions of the same image, such as different resolutions or editing states.
-
Auxiliary Data: HEIC supports the storage of additional data within the image file, such as depth maps, which can be used for features like Portrait Mode on smartphones, or Exif metadata for storing information about the camera settings and location.
Despite its advantages, HEIC is not as widely supported as formats like JPEG or PNG. While Apple devices (iOS and macOS) natively support HEIC, compatibility with other platforms may require additional software or plugins. Notably, Android started supporting HEIC with version 9 (Pie), and Windows 10 added support in 2018 via an optional extension from the Microsoft Store. Many image editing and management tools are gradually adding support for the HEIC format as well.
To create or convert images to the HEIC format, you can use tools like Apple’s built-in Photos app on iOS and macOS or third-party applications like Adobe Photoshop or GIMP with an HEIC plugin.
