WebP

WebP is a modern image format developed by Google, designed to provide better compression and image quality than traditional formats such as JPEG, PNG, and GIF. WebP was introduced in 2010 as a part of Google’s ongoing effort to improve web performance and reduce the size of image files without sacrificing visual quality.

WebP offers both lossless and lossy compression, meaning it can be used for a wide range of applications:

  1. Lossless Compression: WebP uses advanced techniques to compress image data without losing any information, which is particularly useful for images with sharp edges and large areas of solid color, such as illustrations or logos. In comparison to PNG, WebP offers a significant reduction in file size, typically around 26% smaller.
  2. Lossy Compression: WebP also provides lossy compression, where some data is discarded to achieve smaller file sizes. However, it does so in a way that maintains a high level of visual quality. In comparison to JPEG, WebP offers similar or better image quality at a smaller file size (typically 25-34% smaller). WebP also supports transparency, which JPEG does not.

Other notable features of the WebP format include:

  • Animation Support: Like GIF, WebP supports animation, allowing multiple images to be combined into a single file to create short, looping animations. WebP’s superior compression results in smaller file sizes than GIFs while maintaining higher quality.
  • Color Profiles and Metadata: WebP supports embedded ICC color profiles and Exif metadata, ensuring accurate color reproduction and providing additional information about the image, such as the date it was taken or the type of camera used.

WebP is widely supported by modern web browsers, including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge, and Opera. Apple’s Safari browser added support for WebP in macOS Big Sur and iOS 14.

To create or convert images to the WebP format, you can use various tools and libraries provided by Google or third-party applications like ImageMagick or GIMP with the WebP plugin. Many image editing and optimization tools also support WebP as an output format.
